Over the past week, rumors have persisted that Apple is preparing to enter the auto manufacturing business. This speculation was first fueled by the appearance of Chrysler minivans dotting the country that are registered to Apple, Inc. The Wall Street Journal took things a bit further, reporting that Apple has been hiring former, high-level auto industry employees, and has roughly 100 people working on an electric vehicle under the codename “Titan.” Needless to say, many folks in the auto industry are rightly skeptical of a new entry from Apple. Breaking into the auto market is not exactly easy, and building a fully functional, crash tested, and consumer-ready electric vehicle complete with a... Read more...
Days ago, we wrote about a rumor that Apple will unveil some sort of “smart home” system at its upcoming WWDC, and now there’s more grist for the rumor mill: There’s a Smart Home remote coming. According to CNET, a PR person for a universal remote app sent out a message that let slip “Next week Apple will be announcing its iPhone Smart Home remote which will be available sometime in the future." There’s no reason to have a Smart Home Remote if there’s no Smart Home to control, so it would seem that the first rumor is true. Apple’s CarPlay looks to be one of the more innovative products that the company has created since the passing of Steve Jobs, and although it’s likely that we’ll see new cars on the lot with CarPlay technology built in yet this year, Pioneer is offering an aftermarket CarPlay product that you can pop into the car that you already own. The in-dash multimedia system will be available this summer on Pioneer’s NEX receivers via a firmware update and should offer all the features promised by any Apple CarPlay system. “Pioneer’s years of expertise integrating smartphone connectivity into the automotive environment has provided us the opportunity to be among the first... Apple has released an update to its latest mobile OS with iOS 7.1, and among the bug fixes and miscellaneous tweaks, there’s a big new feature with CarPlay. CarPlay allows you to connect your iPhone to your vehicle in a powerful way, most notably by bringing up a variety of apps and tools from your iPhone to the car’s built-in display. You can control CarPlay with Siri voice commands, use the vehicle’s touch display, and even use the car’s own knobs and other controls. That means that maps and driving directions, calls, messaging, and music can all be seamlessly run from your iPhone to your car. Some apps that will work with CarPlay right off the bat include Podcasts,... Read more...
As previously rumored, the folks at Apple are joining forces with a whole bunch of automobile makers to implement and roll out the company's CarPlay technology. What is CarPlay? According to Apple, it's the "smarter, safer, and more fun way to use iPhone in the car," though if you're looking for a less vague description, it's essentially a way to sync the iPhone's functionality with a car's native interface. Using CarPlay, drivers can make calls, use Maps, listen to music, and access music with a spoken word or touch -- just press and hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri without having to fumble around for your iPhone. "CarPlay has been designed from the ground... Read more...
