It's no secret that the past few years in mobile have been rough for Intel, largely due to the fact that ARM has proven itself to be an intense competitor. When smartphones exploded years ago, and tablets later on, it was ARM that dominated the landscape, and today, nothing has changed. ARM has even found itself in some ultra-portables, with the NVIDIA Tegra 2-based ASUS Transformer TF101 being one of the first. Clearly, Intel hasn't been pleased with this, and while its releases in recent years haven't given us the hope that the company would soon find itself in a lot more ultra-portable mobile devices, Core M changes that outlook completely, at least for me. Intel's next-generation Broadwell Y (now known as the Core M processor) is set to ship on schedule for the end of the year. The company, occasionally flagged with criticism of its repeated delays and with its IDF show ramping up next week, is sharing more detail on the upcoming hardware, features and performance characteristics of its new 14nm mobile platform.  We've previously offered up a 14nm deep-dive on how Broadwell Y came to be from a design, process and manufacturing standpoint.  Today, we'll look more closely at how the new Core M processor's feature list, how it will be productized and some high level performance expectations as well. For the past few years, as Intel has struggled to gain market share for its Android-x86 project, it's been hampered by software compatibility issues and associated performance degradation. Now, some of that burden is being lifted off the company's products -- the popular and widespread Unity 3D engine has announced that upcoming versions will include native x86 support. That's important for a host of reasons. Currently, Intel has a host of emulation and translation efforts that ensure nearly seamless compatibility with Android applications. If Intel's recent 14nm Broadwell Y unveil has made anything clear, it's that the company is now determined to go toe-to-toe with every foundry manufacturer at the 14nm node. It wasn't initially clear if this would be the case. While Intel made a big splash with its first 14nm announcements, news of the delays and a robust rebuttal from TSMC concerning the health and capability of its own 20nm and 16nm offerings made it seem as though Intel might have been rocked back on its heels and fighting a defensive front. Intel's latest processor design and manufacturing effort marks a first for the semiconductor industry. No other semiconductor manufacturer in the world is building chips at the level of Intel's 14nm (nanometer) process node; even large memory manufacturers like Toshiba and Samsung are just now hitting 19nm. As we've reported previously, the processor Intel is rolling out for its first volume production vehicle at 14nm is code named "Broadwell." Intel has been busy with announcements this week, but one that was somewhat overlooked is rather interesting on its own: The chipmaker is building a fanless 2-in-1 mobile PC reference design powered by a new class of processor. The device is powered by Intel’s next-gen 14nm Broadwell processors--called the Intel Core M processor--that have been “purpose-built” for the 2-in-1 form factor. Intel is calling the Core M the most efficient processor in its history, and they’ll underpin a wave of fanless, fast, and incredibly thin laptops. When Intel debuted Haswell this year, it launched its first mobile processor with a massive 128MB L4 cache. Dubbed "Crystal Well," this on-package (not on-die) pool of memory wasn't just a graphics frame buffer, but a giant pool of RAM for the entire core to utilize. The performance impact from doing so is significant, though the Haswell processors that utilize the L4 cache don't appear to account for very much of Intel's total CPU volume. Right now, the L4 cache pool is only available on mobile parts, but that could change next year. According to CPU-World, Broadwell-K will change that.
