Utlrabook designs just keep getting thinner, more powerful and more capable with each iteration of the various platforms on the market. Dell's XPS line of ultrabooks has always done relatively well in the arena, with some notable break-out features, like composite carbon fiber construction, that helped them stand out in a sea of offerings from the competition. Dell's new XPS 13 has been compared to Apple's MacBook Air because of its thin stature and overall aesthetic design. However, it's not just the operating system and spec sheet that separates these two laptops, there's also a big divide when it comes to in-home repair. Getting at the guts of a MacBook Air is more challenging than it should be, while the XPS 13 is decidedly easier to open and operate on, according to the latest teardown analysis by iFixIt. Dell took the wraps off a fresh, new revamp of their popular XPS 13 ultrabook line, out at CES in Las Vegas last week. The new machine was widely considered best-of-show for core computing products and racked-up awards left and right from major publications, including accolades from us here. Dell seemingly hit all the high notes with this machine, from its new 14nm Intel Core i5-5200U Broadwell-U processor power plant, to its absolutely stunning 13.3-inch 3200X1800 IPS display that's strapped with Corning Gorilla Glass NBT and nearly completely devoid of bezel on its side and top edges.  Then of course there's Dell's copious use of carbon fiber composite material... Intel's strategically timed CES 2015 launch of their new 5th Generation Core Series processors for notebooks was met with a reasonably warm reception, though it's always difficult to rise above the noise, with the sea of announcements from competitors and the like. CES is always such a zoo and that's by design. Performance claims for Intel's new chip promise major gains in graphics and more modest increases in standard compute applications. However, the biggest bet Intel placed on the new Broadwell-U architecture is performance-per-watt throughput and battery life in premium notebook products that are now in production with major OEM partners like Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Toshiba... Gigabyte is introducing a new X99 motherboard for overclockers that are on a budget. The X99-SOC Champion, like the other members of Gigabyte’s X99 motherboard lineup, supports Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition (LGA 2011-v3 socket) processors, International Rectifier’s all-digital CPU power design, and a PCI Express design that utilizes 100% of all 40 lanes from the processor when in a 4-way or 3-way graphics configurations. Compared to Gigabyte’s existing X99 lineup, the X99-SOC Champion compares most favorably to the X99-SOC Force.
