An Uber self-driving vehicle was just recently involved in a collision in Tempe, Arizona. At the moment there are no reported injuries and Uber has not confirmed whether anyone was in the vehicle during the collision. An Uber spokesperson has confirmed the accident, but did not provide any additional information.  Fresco News user Mark Beach posted the photograph and video of the wrecked vehicle on Twitter just a few short hours ago. The Uber self-driving Volvo XC90 is pictured on its side while the other vehicles are upright with multiple dents. If the car was in self-driving mode, this would be the most serious accident to date involving such a vehicle. Waymo has only experienced a few... Read more...
The British owner of the Segway company, who had purchased the company less than a year ago, in December 2009, from inventor Dean Kamen, has died in a freak accident, driving the vehicle off a cliff. Jimi Heselden was 62. Heselden was reportedly using the Segway to inspect the grounds of his property, when he plunged off a cliff and into the River Wharfe. He was using a special ruggedized country version of the Segway.  The only word that could be used to describe such an accident, with the Segway transporter, which was designed to be safe and (more or less) un-tippable, is ironic. A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called at 11.40AM yesterday (Sunday) to reports of... Read more...

And by 'sky,' we really mean laptop, as in the kind that falls out of a medical helicopter and comes barreling towards the earth. We're not making this up, folks. Little Peterka was enjoying a family cookout on Saturday night when a laptop fell from the sky and landed on the ground just inches away from him. Apparently the laptop came from a medical helicopter that was leaving St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota, as someone managed to leave it on the helicopter's skid. "It fell about here and I was standing right here,"... Read more...
MP3 is a lossy format - meaning you lose quality from the original. Because of that fact, wording in a recently passed Italian law may have just made trading MP3 files legal. The law states that music or images that are at "degraded or low resolution" can be distributed on the Internet "for scientific or educational use, and only when such use is not for profit," according to a rough translation.Experts that have reviewed the law told the Italian daily La Repubblica that even though MP3's are not specifically mentioned, the fact that the word degraded is used implies the existence of that format, which is by technical definition a "lossy" format that loses some fidelity through degradation. An... Read more...
