Yesterday, Apple officially announced its A12 Bionic SoC, which is a 7nm chip built by TSMC. The processor powers the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR. At the time, Apple didn’t provide much with regards to the A12 Bionic's hard numbers or specs other than to say that it has a 6-core CPU (with two high-performance cores that are 15 percent faster than the 10nm A11 Bionic) and a 4-core GPU (which is up to 50 percent faster compared to the outgoing chip). The A12 Bionic is also said to use 50 percent less power than its predecessor. However, we’re now getting... Read more...
Although much of the event was spoiled by leaks, Apple today announced three new iPhones ranging in size from 5.8 inches to 6.5 inches. Apple says that these are the most advanced iPhones that they have ever created, which is something that the company says every year. Starting with iPhone XS, it is a year-over-year upgrade to the iPhone X, so it retains the 5.8-inch OLED display (2436x1125, 458ppi), Face ID (now with faster respond times) and dual rear cameras. The iPhone XS is IP68 rated, and the display now features better dynamic range, and there is improved stereo sound compared... Read more...
Time and again, we have seen Apple do more with less when it comes to its custom mobile processors for iPhone and iPad devices. The company's hardware products often trail the competition in specs, but lead or otherwise offer performance parity to the competition. A new leak suggests that will again be the case when Apple's A12 processor arrives. Prominent leaker Ice Universe claims to have some inside information on the A12 chip, including preliminary Geekbench scores. In a post on Weibo, he said the A12 scored 4,690 in Geekbench's single-core test, and 12,908 in the multi-core portion of the... Read more...
Things are looking up for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) after the company posted a decline in revenue for its quarter ending in June. TSMC is now predicting significant increases in revenue moving through the third and fourth quarters of 2018. The gain in revenue is, according to industry sources, thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 11 Series GPU and Apple's A12 SoC. Apple is rolling out three new iPhones in September, according to rumors, that will all use the A12 SoC that TSMC builds on its 7nm process technology. NVIDIA is also tapping TSMC for its GeForce GTX 11 GPU tech... Read more...
One thing that's been interesting to watch at Apple is how its custom processors always seem to outperform their specs, compared to other chipsets on the market. It's a remarkable thing, and rumor has it that will again be the case when Apple releases upgraded iPhone models later this year. The company is reportedly prepping a couple of 'Vortex' processors, the A12 and A12X, and they're said to be significantly faster than its current A11 Bionic silicon. Apple's next-gen A12 and A12X processors are said to be much faster than its current A11 Bionic. This sort of thing should always be taken with... Read more...
