If you’re a fan of Samsung’s 850 EVO SSD series (and we here at HotHardware are definitely big fans), you’ll be happy to know that the family is growing in size yet again. After announcing 2TB capacities a year ago, Samsung has seized on the opportunity to double the maximum storage capacity of the 850 EVO to a capacious 4TB — large enough to hold 1,000 two-hour-long compressed full-length 1080p movies. Under the hood, you’ll still find Samsung’s 48-layer 256Gbit TLC V-NAND, which the company says “delivers unsurpassed performance, reliability and capacity.” With TurboWrite enabled, the new 4TB 850 EVO is capable of 540 MB/s sequential reads and 525 MB/s writes. 4KB random reads (QD1) are listed... If you haven't yet upgraded from a mechanical hard drive to a solid state drive, take the plunge and thank us later. The difference in performance across the board is both dramatic and noticeable, and though SSDs are comparatively pricey, there are deals to be had. One of them is Samsung's 850 EVO 500GB SSD at Amazon. The online retailer is selling the 500GB model for $147.99 with free shipping for Prime members. That works out to less than 30 cents per gigabyte, and to sweeten the deal, Amazon will email a redemption code for Assassin's Creed Syndicate within 1-2 business days of making your purchase. It's the best deal out of Samsung's 850 EVO SSD series, which also happens to be the same capacity... In case you haven’t already read the Hot Hardware reviews, we’re big fans of Samsung’s 850 EVO and 850 PRO SSDs. The drives come backed with 5-year warranty (10-year for the PRO), offer excellent reliability, and are top-notch performers in synthetic and real world benchmarks. Not content with tackling the “internal” storage market, the company introduced the Portable SSD T1, which is essentially an 850 EVO wrapped in a pretty enclosure with a USB 3.0 interface. Now, Samsung is turning its attention back to internal SSDs with the introduction of a range-topping 2TB storage tier for the 850 EVO and 850 PRO. Like the other, less capacious members of the family, the new 2TB SSDs feature 2.5-inch... Read more...
Samsung is introducing a number of new members to their SSD 850 EVO line-up of Solid State Drives, based on different form factors than the standard 2.5” drives we showed you here. The brand new mSATA and M.2 Samsung SSD 850 EVO drives being announced today, however, leverage all of the same technology. The last few generations of Samsung’s 2.5” Solid State Drive utilized PCBs that barley filled up half of their encloses, and a large portion of those PCBs were dedicated to the standard SATA power and data cable connectors, so it’s no shock to see these new, smaller variants arrive with mSATA and M.2 support. We’ve got a couple of drives in hand, a 500GB M.2 Samsung SSD 850 EVO and a 1TB mSATA... Now that Christmas is behind us, the first thing to do as we head into 2015 is relax for a moment -- you survived the hustle and bustle of what will likely rank as the busiest holiday shopping season ever. Once you've taken a deep breath and composed yourself, go ahead and assess your gifts. Tie? Check. Socks? Check. Number One Dad/Mom/Grandpa/Whatever mug? Check. Upgrades for your computer? Hmm, we're guessing the kids didn't stick their noses inside your rig to see what PC parts you could use, which is just as well -- this sort of thing is best handled by ourselves. And if we guessed right, here's a heads up that the Samsung 850 EVO solid state drive line is available on Amazon at around 50... Read more...

Samsung is at the ready with a brand new family of mainstream solid state drives, targeting the market segment previously occupied by its popular SSD 840 EVO series. The new Samsung SSD 850 EVO series is the follow-up to the company’s current flagship SSD 850 PRO, but the new EVO is Samsung’s first to pack 32‐layer 3D V‐NAND 3-bit MLC flash memory. The move to 32‐layer 3D V‐NAND 3-bit MLC flash (a.k.a. TLC) brings costs down, but doesn’t adversely affect endurance because the cell structure doesn’t suffer from the same inherent limitations of planar NAND, since the cells are stacked vertically with the 3D V‐NAND.We’ve got a 500GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO on the test bench and have compared it to the...
