Intel announced its Optane Memory H10 back during the Consumer Electronics Show, early this year. Just in case you missed the initial announcement, the company's Optane Memory H10 is a new class of products from Intel that combines 3D Xpoint memory technology and QLC (quad-level cell) 3D NAND flash on a single M.2 device. The goal for the product is to offer the benefits of 3D Xpoint and Optane Memory in conjunction with the affordability and speed of a QLC-based NVMe SSD in a single device. Intel is upping the ante in the enthusiast storage space again, with a brand-new 3D Xpoint-based drive called the Optane SSD 905P. As its name implies, the Optane SSD 905P isn’t a major departure from the Optane SSD 900P that was released a few month back, but Intel was worked a bit of magic to improve performance in a few ways. Intel is launching its latest Optane-branded family of solid state drives today, the Intel Optane SSD 800P. Unlike the Intel Optane Memory devices, which accelerate hybrid storage configurations through intelligent data caching, or the Optane SSD 900P that’s aimed squarely at hardcore enthusiasts with big budgets, the Intel Optane 800P targets the meat of the mobile and desktops markets, with higher capacities than Optane Memory, but much more affordable pricing than the 900P. Intel gave us a taste of what its Optane could do on consumer desktop systems a few months back when it launched its Optane Memory technology. Those miniscule drives did a great job caching data to give compatible systems packing slower hard drives a huge boost in responsiveness and overall performance. The performance characteristics of Optane Memory also left many enthusiasts chomping at the bit for higher-capacity, speedier Optane SSDs for high-end desktops, however. Intel is really cranking up the heat when it comes to products based on its 3D Xpoint memory technology. The commercial name of this tech, however, is Optane, and we've seen retail releases in the form of the Optane SSD DC P4800X enterprise drive, which is available in a 375GB capacity, and the Optane SSD 900P, which is an enthusiast-class product available in 280GB and 480GB capacities. We have been hearing a lot about 3D XPoint memory (now called Optane) over the past couple of years, and more recently we have seen some related products emerge, including a PCIe-based solid state drive for enterprise clients, the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X. Intel today is following that up with the Optane SSD 900P Series, a new SSD line that also uses 3D XPoint memory, but is aimed at consumers. The Optane SSD DC P4800X is an enterprise-class product, targeted at data centers and mission-critical applications where reliable, ultra-low-latency access to large amounts of data is paramount. If there's one downside to following the rapid progression of technology, it's that we're often stuck waiting for the next best thing to arrive. That couldn't be any more true than it is with memory and storage technologies. The number of times we've talked about "breakthroughs" in memory are too numerous to count, so when we first wrote about Intel and Micron's joint 3D XPoint memory two summers ago, we knew we'd be in for a bit of a wait. 3D XPoint (now called Optane) is soon reaching market availability, but we are still in for a long wait on Intel and Micron's promises made two years ago that the tech would be 1,000x faster than NAND with 1,000x the endurance. Intel hopes that its 3D XPoint technology that it developed in conjunction with Micron will lead to a new generation of ultra-fast SSDs. The new memory technology, which is being marketed under the Optane brand name, is claimed to eventually be 1000 times faster and 1000 times more reliable than traditional NAND.
