Verizon to Launch First Batch of LTE-Only Phones in Late 2014
"We will get this right. Our brand is built on reliability," Verizon Chief Network Officer Nicki Palmer said during a conference call with reporters, according to CNET.
Verizon Wireless already offers a 4G LTE-only device in the Samsung Galaxy Camera, and by the end of next year, it will offer 4G LTE-only smartphones, too.
One of the upshots to a 4G LTE-only device is that it could potentially be thinner and less expensive since it only needs one cellular radio. That in and of itself isn't likely to be a game changer, but combined with other advances in mobile technology, tomorrow's smartphones could be even slimmer than today's thinnest devices.
VZW said it's "working aggressively" to add voice to its 4G LTE network. When it happens, it will be like flipping a light switch on its entire network rather than rolling out the feature by individual markets.
