Sony has announced a Midnight Black version of its PS5 Digital Edition, delivering a sleek, stealthy alternative to the familiar white number plus an aggressive price tag of roughly $350. Sadly, this console is a Japan-only exclusive. Nonetheless, the November 19 launch (the same day Grand Theft Auto VI arrives) will be great buy for budget-conscious Japanese gamers.
The new Midnight Black variant follows last year's Japanese PS5 Digital Edition release, whereby both models retain regional hardware boundaries to prevent international re-exporters and scalpers from buying up stock. The console language is permanently set to Japanese, and it functions exclusively with PlayStation Network accounts registered to Japan.
Under the hood, it's all standard PS5 specs, including an 825GB custom SSD, 3D audio, and high-speed GDDR6 memory. Sony is also introducing a matching Midnight Black detachable disc drive for 11,980 yen (around $76) for those who want some backwards compatibility.

No doubt, one of the biggest boons of the Midnight Black version is price; we think Sony's aggressive subsidization of the Japanese-only SKU is to help retain local market share against portable competitors and mobile gaming ecosystems. Global supply chain shifts, memory cost spikes, and tariff pressures have pushed digital PS5 prices in North America to around $600. Even within Japan, standard, non-restricted digital models sit closer to 89,980 yen (about $570). Pre-orders open across Japanese retailers and digital storefronts on October 20.
Somewhat awkwardly, even as it launches the Midnight Black disc drive accessory, Sony reiterated in its Japanese PlayStation Blog that all new PlayStation software released from January 2028 onward will transition to a digital-only format. Sure, players will still be able to play legacy physical discs purchased before then, but future flagship games will say bye-bye to retail discs entirely.
For gamers outside of Asia hoping for a similar price drop or an all-black aesthetic, we can't help you with the former, but for the latter, some sandpaper and matte black spray paint will bring the same effect. If you're not as handy with a spray can, here are some other potential options:
