Samsung Launches Next-Gen NVMe High-Performance SSDs with Capacities Up To 1.6TB
The main reason to choose a solid state drive (SSD) over a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) is speed. With few exceptions, SSDs are simply faster, and in many cases, they can run circles around even the speediest HDDs. They're also more expensive and usually smaller in capacity, though advances in technology are working to reduce those tradeoffs. Enter Samsung, which just announced that it's developed the industry's first 2.5-inch NVM Express (NVMe) PCI-Express SSD.
Samsung's new drives features up to 1.6TB of storage capacity and are intended for the high-end enterprise storage market. They boast up to 3,000MB/s sequential read performance, allowing them to process 500GB of data in under 3 minutes. That's the equivalent of 100 Full HD 1080p movies 5GB in length. According to Samsung, a NVMe SSD is 14 times faster than a high-end enterprise HDD for server use, and 6 times faster than Samsung's previous high-end enterprise SSD.
For customers who don't need that amount of storage, the NVMe SSD also ships in 800GB and 400GB capacities. Of course, this is just the beginning. In the coming years, Samsung said it will continue to develop a variety of NVMe SSD products with a focus on increasingly high performance levels.
