Qualcomm's 10.1" Quad-Core Development Tablet Hits For $1,299

Cores, cores, and a few more cores. It's pretty tough to ever have enough of the things, and Qualcomm seems to agree. The company has just announced the availability of the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro Mobile Development platform for tablets. The Snapdragon S4 APQ8064-based dev tool provides access to Android 4.0 for "app and game development." The announcement was actually made by BAQUARE Corp., noting that the next generation Mobile Development Platform (MDP/T) for Android tablets based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro Processor. The MDP/T provides application developers and device manufacturers with access to a high-performance Android 4.0 platform for developing, testing, optimizing and showcasing applications and games.

It's hailed as the first Snapdragon based Mobile Development Platform in a tablet form factor available to developers, middleware vendors and others. It's also the first to feature the Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor by Qualcomm with asynchronous Quad CPU cores, running up to 1.5 GHz each. The platform offers up built-in graphics enabled by Adreno 320 GPU, and there's also a 10.1" WXGA multi-touch panel. The slate is priced at $1,299. That's hardly cheap, but remember, this is a development tool. If you're a dev, you'll understand that these platforms are never "cheap," and it's actually quite probable that this unit will get Android developments going on the tablet side where it has languished in the past. Ice Cream Sandwich needs some tablet-specific apps, and this seems like a great opportunity to get that ball rolling.
