Not long after Apple unveiled its iPhone 5c, which is available in a variety of attractive colors, Nokia took to Twitter to give a shout-out. On top of a picture showing off its own recent Lumia line, which also comes in a variety of attractive colors, it says, "Imitation Is The Best Form of Flattery". Shots were fired, and for the most part, it seemed to get a chuckle out of a lot of people.
Clearly, however, the fact that Nokia took a jab at Apple in this way struck some as a bit odd, given Apple enjoys a huge piece of the smartphone marketshare pie, while Nokia's share is so small, it'd be equivalent to a single bite (and who can have just one bite of a delicious pie?). Still, Nokia's Lumia series has long been available in many different colors, so it's not hard to understand why the company felt so compelled to say something.
As it turns out, the move to post this to Twitter was very smart indeed, with Twitter verifying that Nokia's post has officially become the most retweeted brand tweet ever. It even surpasses the success of Oreo's classic tweet this past February, which poked at the power outage during the Superbowl.
Well done, Nokia. Next challenge? Working to increase that marketshare wouldn't be a bad idea. With Microsoft's recent announcement of an acquisition, we can't help but wonder if Microsoft can somehow eat away at the share of either Apple or Google.
