Microsoft Surface 2 Still Sold Out With Most Major Retailers As Demand Outstrips Supply
Shortly after hearing that Chromebook uptake has been on the rise, largely at the expense of Microsoft, it appears that the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are both tough cookies to score. The 32GB and 64GB Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro are still out of stock at Microsoft's online shop, as are similar models of the Pro 2 with more storage. The only model still around is the monster $1799 512GB Surface Pro 2.
Of course, resellers such as Amazon, Staples, and Best Buy may have stock depending on location, but the sold-out nature at Microsoft's own domain has to mean one of a few things. Either Microsoft under-estimated demand, or they just couldn't source enough from suppliers in the run-up to Christmas. Given how poorly the original Surface went over, it'll be very interesting to see the eventual sales figures for the second model. If Microsoft can't turn the corner with tablets on this generation, one has to wonder how long it'll remain in the game. If you recall back to the Zune, Microsoft fought the iPod for years before eventually turning its eye elsewhere -- hopefully, we'll see a much closer battle this time around, as we'd all benefit from the increased competition.
