Micron Makes a Real(SSD) Splash in the Enterprise Market

Micron, who you might recognize better as the parent company of Crucial, has come up with a new line of solid state drives aimed squarely at the enterprise environment. Dubbed RealSSD P300, this new series comes out of the gates with SATA 6Gbps support -- a first ever for the enterprise market -- and up to 44,000 IOPS reads and 16,000 IOPS writes, or more than 15 times the write performance of competing SATA-based SSDs, Crucial claims.

"Aside from its raw performance, the RealSSD P300 product was also designed to reach industry leading steady-state capabilities, even with the write cache disabled. With the P300, users no longer have to choose between IOPs or throughput and maximum data resiliency -- they can have both in the same drive," said Dean Klein, Micron vice president of Memory System Development.

These new drives will come in capacities of 50GB, 100GB, and 200GB and are intended for use in blade and conventional servers, storage arrays, and high-end workstations with 2.5-inch drive bays. At its best, the RealSSD P300 family will boast up to 360MB/s read and up to 275MB/s write speeds, Micron says.

Look for the P300 to start shipping in October.
