Intel Core i7-7740K Kaby Lake-X Hits 7.5GHz Overclock Breaking World Records On Gigabyte X299 Motherboard
The gathering brought in some big names from the overclocking community, including HiCookie, Sofos, Dinos22, Youngpro, and SniperOZ. All of them toiled away through Computex en route to setting four new 3DMark world records at crazy high overclocks using exotic cooling.
"In order to push past the 7.5GHz barrier, the team of overclockers employed liquid helium to drop temperatures to a mind numbingly low -250C. Gigabyte now dominates the world record in 3DMark03, 3DMark06, and Aquamark," Gigabyte boasted in a press release. "The 3DMark06 world record was broken not once but twice over the past week, using different hardware configurations, subsequently making one of those scores a global first."

The world records were set in test beds consisting of a Gigabyte Aorus X299-SOC Champion motherboard, G.Skill Trident-Z 3600C17 memory, and an Aorus GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition 11G graphics card all powered by a Corsair AX 1500i PSU.

For the test bed that hit 7.5GHz, a 16GB kit of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-4333 was used. In all, it was an impressive day of extreme overclocking, and one that reflected well not only Gigabyte, but Intel and its Kaby Lake-X architecture.
It will be interesting to see how long these records last. Going forward, both Intel and AMD have new high-end desktop (HEDT) processors launching to consumers. With regards to Intel, its beastly lineup will culminate in an 18-core chip with 36 threads (Core i9-7980XE), while AMD's Threadripper family will have up to 16 cores and 32 threads.
