Hewlett-Packard Biggest; Getting More Embiggened
Hewlett-Packard is still the world's largest seller of PCs. It surpassed Dell for the top spot a year ago, and is now widening its lead over Dell and everybody else. During the third quarter of 2007, H-P shipped 12.8 million PCs worldwide; that's 18.8% of the total market, and represents a whopping 33% jump from the same period last year. Dell is now a distant second with 9.8 million units shipped, followed by Acer, Lenovo, and Toshiba.
In the U.S., Dell still maintained its top position, but saw its share eroded by gains from H-P, Apple Inc. and Toshiba.
Dell shipped 4.8 million PCs in the U.S., which gave it 29% of the
market. However, its shipments fell 5.5% from a year ago. By contrast,
H-P shipped 4.3 million PCs, enough to claim a market share of almost
26%, and an increase of 16.5% from last year's third quarter.
Gartner analyst Mikako
Kitagawa said that for the first time in the U.S., mobile PC sales
topped those of desktop units. Kitagawa said that the quarter is
typically led by back-to-school sales, but that Gartner's results
suggested the back-to-school market was weaker than expected in the
U.S.
