Dutch Court Favors Apple in Patent Case, Samsung Must Pay Damages
The latest news in the legal deathmatch between Apple and Samsung is that the former scored a win against the latter in a Dutch court. A judge there ruled that some of Samsung’s Galaxy devices violated an Apple patent, and the company would therefore need to pay Apple damages.
The final bill is not yet known, but the court will levy the damages depending on how much profit Samsung has made on the devices in question.
The apparent patent violation concerns Samsung Galaxy S, SII, and Ace devices running Android 2.2.1 to 2.3.7. The offense? According to The Register, the Galaxy devices infringed upon a photo scrolling patent (specifically, European Patent 2 059 868 B1). Yes, photo scrolling.

Worse, Samsung believes that it already addressed this particular issue by slightly tweaking its photo scrolling functionality, which makes the whole thing seem even more ridiculous. (There appear to be conflicting reports about this aspect of the case, with some outlets reporting that Samsung tried and failed to fix the offending functionality and others indicating that the company successfully changed newer Galaxy devices but forgot to make the change to some of its older devices.)
In any case, the devices are banned, and the court will assess fines to the tune of 100,000 euros for every day Samsung violates the ban.
