Canon on Wednesday unveiled a brand new camera, though it's not another digital SLR (
DSLR). As
previously rumored, Canon announced its EOS R, a full-frame mirrorless camera featuring a redesigned RF mount and a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor powered by the company's DIGIC 8 image processor. It can shoot at up to 8 frames per second.
This is a prosumer
camera that is relatively compact and lightweight. It measures 5.35 x 3.87 x 3.32 inches based on CIPA standards (5.35 x 3.87 x 2.67 inches from grip to monitor) with a body weight of 1.28 pounds, or 1.46 pounds including the battery and SD memory card. Here's how it compares (in size) to the
EOS 5D Mark IV...
Canon is really pushing the new RF mount on its newest camera model.
"Canon’s new RF mount features the same size diameter as the EF mount (54mm) and shorter back focus distance. This allows for lenses to sit closer to the sensor (the focal plane) and allowed Canon optical engineers to reimagine lens design utilizing larger rear lens elements to produce an image on the full-frame sensor," Canon explains.
"This new optical formula has paved the way for higher performing lenses. In addition, the Canon RF mount features a high-speed 12-pin communication system that provides faster and more in-depth communication between the camera and lens over existing Canon mount systems," Canon added.
Canon also notes that the EOS R is compatible with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E, and MP-E lenses through the use of mount adapters.
The EOS R has an ISO range of 100-40,000 (expandable to 102,400). It also features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone (24x16) real-time metering system. If using an f/1.2 lens, the EOS R boasts AF sensitivity in low light in as little as EV-6, Canon says.
Other features include USB 3.1 in-camera charging support, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, CR3 and Dual Pixel RAW support, and dust and weather resistance.
The EOS R will be available in October for $2,299 for the body only. Photographers will also have the option of buying a body and lens kit (RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM) for $3,399.
