We hope sales of Microsoft's second generation Surface products are doing well, because as we saw first-hand when they were being introduced, there's a lot to like about these devices. Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro are much faster than the original Surface products, they're more flexible in what they can do, they're better designed, and they're even easier to type on using the Touch Cover 2 with its higher resolution membrane switch panel behind the key caps.
Pricing is also pretty fair when you put into perspective what you get. There's a lot of negativity surrounding Surface because of the $900 million charge Microsoft took on unsold inventory, but looking at Surface 2, you get a 10.6-inch tablet with 32GB of storage, Wi-Fi, USB 3.0, microSD card slot, and HD video output for $449. An iPad tablet with the same storage but less features runs $599, and those sell pretty well.
None of that necessarily means Surface 2 is selling like gangbusters, as Microsoft's tweet seems to insinuate. We've heard the spiel about selling out of inventory in regards to the original Surface, and we all know how that turned out. However, we're hopeful that consumers are finding value in Surface 2, both because we think it's a good product, and because Microsoft still needs to find its footing in mobile.
