AT&T Launches First LTE Devices On August 21st
LTE is coming! LTE is coming! In fact, LTE is already here for Verizon Wireless, but AT&T has to start somewhere. While America's largest GSM carrier already calls their HSPA+ networks "4G," they'll have to come up with some other name for LTE once it launches on August 21st. That's right, it's a date. The carrier had maintained for some time now that it would be a summer launch for five initial LTE markets, and they've finally settled on the 21st. That's soon, very soon.
The first LTE devices on AT&T won't be phones; in fact, no LTE phones have been announced yet for AT&T. But those looking to surf LTE waves can do so with the launch of the USBConnect Momentum 4G and AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G. Both support the LTE network, and both will be on sale on the 21st. AT&T also confirmed data pricing for data-only mobile broadband devices on the company's forthcoming LTE network. Customers will be able to choose 5 gigabytes of data for a monthly rate of $50 with any additional data consumed available for $10 per gigabyte. The LTE-upgradeable AT&T USBConnect Adrenaline will also be able to be updated to LTE beginning Aug. 26.
AT&T recently announced plans to roll out 4G LTE in five markets – Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio – later this summer. By the end of 2011, AT&T plans to offer 4G LTE to customers in at least 15 markets, but there's still a ton of work to be done before they catch up to VZW.
