UL Benchmarks' 3DMark is adding real-time ray tracing support to its suite of benchmarks thanks to support for the DirectX Raytracing API. The new test is called 3DMark Port Royal and will support any graphics card that is compatible with DirectX Raytracing.

UL Benchmarks says that it worked with some of the top tech titans in the gaming industry including Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA to make sure that the benchmark is representative of the performance that we can expect from current- and next-generation hardware. Right now, the only graphics cards that support DirectX Raytracing without being hit with a severe performance penalty is NVIDIA's GeForce RTX family. Currently, the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti the most powerful real-time ray tracing gaming card on the market, followed by the GeForce RTX 2080 and the GeForce RTX 2070.

According to the company, 3DMark Port Royal will display "[enhanced] reflections, shadows, and other effects that are difficult to achieve with traditional rendering techniques". UL Benchmarks goes on to add that the 3DMark Port Royal represents a "realistic and practical" look at upcoming games running at "reasonable frame rates" at a resolution of 2560x1440.

3DMark Port Royal will first be put on daily at the GALAX GOC Grand Final on December 8th in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Some of the world's best overclockers will be tasked with tweaking their systems to achieve the best score possible in 3DMark Port Royal.

As for when 3D Mark Port Royal will be available to the general public, UL Benchmarks says that it will be released in January 2019.
