Apparently offended by a random Twitter user who basically called them small potatoes as the group had been picking on relatively small targets such as Eve Online and others, LulzSec has pulled off their biggest hack ever: they have, according to the group, taken down cia.gov. The CIA site is again up, as least for now. The Twitter user, @Quadrapodacone,... Read more...
The 614 area code. There's a big clue for investigators, as hacker group LulzSec, which has been in the news a lot lately over various hacks (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) has created a telephone "hotline" which people can call to request a hack. The "Dial-a-Hack Hotline" is at 614-LULZSEC. LulzSec Tweeted the number nearly a day ago, saying that the... Read more...
Nokia on Tuesday announced that it had settled its patent fight with Apple, which was about 1 1/2 years old. Nokia first sued Apple in October of 2009. The settlement includes a one-time lump sum payment from Apple to Nokia, along with future royalties. Deutsche Bank analyst Kai Korschelt said in a research note that Nokia is likely to receive... People in the U.S. both cheered and blinked in wonder on Tuesday, as factory unlocked iPhone 4s became available in the online Apple Store, at $649 and $749 (16GB or 32GB). This is the first time ever that unlocked iPhones have been sold in the U.S. Previously, U.S. users who wanted to have an unlocked iPhone would have to jailbreak and unlock... Read more...
Turkey has set itself up to be hacked, as it has announced it has detained 32 individuals allegedly linked to the hacker group.  Turkey's state run news agency said the arrests took place across 12 cities, including Ankara and Istanbul. Earlier, it was reported that Spain had detained three Anonymous members as well. In reprisal, Anonymous... Read more...

It's pretty easy it was to get around the New York Times' newly erected paywall, and now there's a free Chrome browser extension that does exactly the same thing for the Wall Street Journal. The extension, "Read WSJ Extension," has been labeled as a way to "cheat" the Wall Street Journal, but we're not quite so hyperbolic in our view.... Read more...
Government tests appear to confirm earlier tests done by the GPS industry: LightSquared's proposed mobile broadband network disrupts GPS devices in the area. The data is given more weight by the impartiality of the testing, but wasn't a surprise: LightSquared's spectrum block is right next to that used by GPS receivers. All GPS devices tested... Evernote, whose slogan is "Remember Everything," has come up with a brilliant app that leverages Apple's smart cover behavior to create a new take on flash cards. You remember flash cards, don't you? Apple's smart covers (and some third party covers) have that clever feature whereby the iPad 2 turns off when the smart... Read more...

Apple has just updated its App Store Reviewal Guidelines, not surprising since the company just launched the iOS 5 beta to developers. Some might not "drink to" at least one of the changes: DUI checkpoint apps are now banned from the App Store. The change possibly came as a result of a request from U.S. Senators Harry Reid (D-NV), Charles... Read more...

The Droid Bionic has been off the radar for some, pulled for what were cited as undisclosed "enhancements." While that sounded like some changes in the internal hardware specs and software, it appears that the Bionic is getting some exterior changes, too. It's another example of the FUBAR that can happen simply because people don't realize that when creating a Facebook event, it defaults to public, so that anyone can see it. On the other hand, one has to believe that those people who jump on such a mistake simply need to find something better to do with their lives. In... Read more...

MobileMe is dead, long live iCloud. That's what we now know after WWDC 2011's keynote by Steve Jobs. Unexpectedly: iCloud will be free ... partially. Unlike MobileMe, which carried a $99 annually price point, iCloud will be free, until you get to the music portion. More on that later. iCloud sounds a lot like Google's cloud-based services.... We understand why LulzSec chose to target PBS, Sony, and the FBI. But why they chose to attack Nintendo escapes us. Perhaps the hacker group, which has become very high profile of late (and always emphasizes they are not affiliated with Anonymous, another highly publicized group) simply wanted to stay in the news. Nintendo acknowledged the... Read more...
RadioShack has lost ground to Best Buy, and even Wal-mart and Target, and based on their technical expertise as demonstrated by this ad, it's no wonder why. The ad, which came via an email, says buyers should "Make It an Android." However, the fact is that the Nokia Astound is a Symbian 3 device. At least the HTC Evo 4G and HTC Evo Shift 4G... It looks like Apple may be moving toward the possibility of automatic OTA updates of apps in iOS 5. Currently such updates have to be manually initiated, either via the App Store iOS app or by syncing with iTunes. A MacRumors reader tipped the site to the fact that when asking iTunes to check an end users' app library for updates, the following... Read more...
