Sony Confirms 'The Interview' Will See Limited Release Christmas Day

Breaking news, folks -- Sony has decided not to bow to pressure from hackers to cancel the Christmas Day debut of "The Interview," at least not outright. In a statement pulled from NBC's Facebook page and making the rounds on the web, Sony confirmed the film will have a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 25, 2014.

"We have never given up on releasing 'The Interview' and we're excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment. "At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience."

"I want to thank our talent on 'The Interview' and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film's release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech."

It's not yet known how many theaters are jumping on board, and it's possible that this could have a trickle down effect where more cinemas show support for Sony. With that said, it appears the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema chain will play the flick, according to a Twitter post by founder Tim League.

Even one of the stars of the movie, Seth Rogan, took to Twitter to applaud the move.

Sony initially cancelled the Christmas Day release of "The Interview" when hackers threatened violence against moviegoers and cinemas. However, Sony didn't have much of a choice when movie chains big and small said they weren't going to show the film.

With this new announcement, it will be interesting to see how many movie chains stand up and support Sony on this one.
