Survey: Almost Every American Owns a Cell Phone
If we were to ask you what percentage of Americans do you think own a cell phone, what would you say? 35 percent? 50 percent? 75 percent!? If you said 75 percent, pat yourself on the back for picking the most obvious answer, but you're still wrong. The answer is D, 91 percent of Americans carry a cell phone.
That's according to the CTIA, which recently released the results of its semiannual U.S. wireless industry survey for the last half of the 2009. According the CTIA, there are over 285 million Americans who are mobile subscribers, which is 15 million more than one year prior.
That's great for wireless service providers, who benefited from $77 billion in total revenue for the last half of the year. And with the continued popularity of smartphones, it should come as no surprise that wireless data services grew the most, up 26 percent year-over-year to claim $22 billion.
Want some more numbers to chew on? How about this - Americans sent and received some 822 billion text messages, or 5 billion a day, for the second half of 2009, and over 1.5 trillion messages for the entire year. That's more than double the number of text messages in 2008.
