Google is just a few months away from revealing its 2017 Android flagships, which are codenamed Taimen and Walleye. We’ve seen speculative renders of the Pixel XL 2 (Taimen), and that device looks to minimize its display bezels, opting for a design that is becoming increasingly common in 2017-era Android flagships. However, new images from seasoned leaker Evan Blass suggest that the smaller Pixel 2 (Walleye) won’t be too far removed from its predecessor when it comes to design. Although it may be a little difficult to tell from the grainy images, the Pixel 2 still features rather large bezels framing the top and bottom of the display. What’s interesting — if this leak proves to be accurate —... Read more...
When it comes to Google’s next generation Android flagships, we’ve covered plenty of leaks on the devices’ rumored specs and features, but we haven’t seen much with regards to what the actual smartphones will look like. Thankfully, a new leak is giving us our first look at the overall design language of the upcoming devices. Android Police has just posted a speculative render of the second-generation Pixel XL (which we’ll simply call Pixel 2 XL from here on out) based on information received from its sources. While the Pixel 2 XL (codename Taimen) might not come out looking 100 percent identical to this render, the publication has a confidence rating of 8 out of 10 on this report, and its past... Google is very much a participant in the smartphone wars even if it does not go blazing into battle with the biggest, baddest artillery. That is okay, because one of the draws of its own phones is they are among the first to receive new builds of Android. They also lack third-party skins and other bloat. All that said, Google fans are looking forward to the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2, both of which have been the subject of numerous leaks and rumors in recent weeks. The latest leak provides details on what is allegedly a finalized spec sheet.Let's start with the larger of the two, Google's Pixel XL 2. You may have seen references to this phone before under its internal codename Taimen, which is a... Read more...
One of Google's forthcoming Pixel 2 devices has found its way to Geekbench, giving us a better idea of what specifications to expect and how it might perform. The device in question is codenamed "Taimen," named after a large fish that can tip the scales at up to 220 pounds. It is one of three Pixel 2 devices Google has on tap, the other two featuring codenames "Walleye" and "Muskie," which are also named after large fish. We'll get to the Geekbench listing in a moment, but first let's talk about these codenames. References to all three fish were discovered when digging through code in Google's latest AOSP (Android Open Source Project). It's been assumed that they refer to Pixel 2 handsets, though... Something fishy is going on at Google, though not in a bad way. During a discussion at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Google's Rich Osterloh confirmed that there would be a successor to the company's Pixel smartphone in 2017. He stopped well short of offering up any sort of details, but if you go fishing for information like we did, you'll discover three potential Pixel 2 handsets, each one codenamed after a large fish.In digging through the code for Google's latest AOSP (Android Open Source Project), German-language website WinFuture found references to "Walleye," "Muskie," and "Taimen," each of which are large species of fish. They are all listed in conjunction with Qualcomm's powerhouse... Read more...
