Just over a year ago, lawmakers asked for the assistance of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) in investigating Verizon’s use of supercookies to track users. After a lengthy investigation, the FCC returned its verdict today, fining Verizon $1.35 million for tracking users without their consent in an effort to deliver targeted advertising. It appears that Verizon's supercookie is indeed "super", as we're still unable to escape it. Earlier this year, Verizon came under fire for making use of a cookie that works even when offline, and was impossible to disable. After a bit of prodding, the company decided to let users disable it, but not without getting them to jump through some hoops. The reason this "cookie" is so notable is because it can send back a wealth of information to Verizon and its partners. This goes as far as being able to identify which apps you're using on your mobile phone, and where you use them. In late January, Verizon Wireless announced its plan to allow customers to opt out of its Unique Identifier Header (UIDH). The UIDH is better known as a “supercookie” in the tech circle, as it can’t be deleted by customers and is used primarily for advertising purposes. Today, Verizon has finally updated its systems to allow customers to opt-out of the tracking mechanism. Customers can either login to their account online (by visiting this link) or call 1-866-211-0874 to opt-out of the intrusive tracking system.
