A former Facebook executive sparked a firestorm yesterday (and prodded some nods of approval) when he decried that he has “tremendous guilt” for being a part of a social media platform that is “ripping society apart” at the seams. The exec, Chamath Palihapitiya, was at Facebook from 2007 to 2011 and said the company manipulates its users and that he won’t even let his own kids use the platform (We guess that means no Messenger Kids in the Palihapitiya household). Maybe you already knew this, or at least had a hunch, but Facebook and other social networks are intentionally designed to trigger an emotional response to keep users coming back, according to Sean Parker, who amassed a fortune helping launch the world's largest social playground with Mark Zuckerberg. Now a philanthropist, Parker is at a point of reflection in his life, and he is not necessarily proud of what he helped create at Facebook.
