It is always and adventure when Microsoft rolls out a major feature update to Windows 10. Fortunately, the November 2019 Update is less ambitious than most previous ones (it's more akin to a Service Pack from yesteryear), and in my experience, it installs fairly quick and easy. Nevertheless, Microsoft has identified an issue and is blocking the update on potentially affected PCs. What this boils down to is a lingering compatibility issue between recent builds of Windows 10, including the November 2019 Update (version 1909) and a now-outdated version of Realtek Bluetooth driver. If you are running a driver version earlier than 1.5.1012, you will not be able to update Windows 10 to the latest version.... Read more...
Earlier this month, Microsoft released the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to the general public in waves, and for the most part, things have gone relatively smoothly (at least if you aren’t running RAID on a Ryzen-based system). Microsoft allowed an extra month for testing with Windows Insiders and has taken additional steps to ensure that the May 2019 Update wouldn't be as disastrous as the preceding October 2018 Update. We’re not all that big on accessories around here, and ZOTAC is calling its new streaming and sharing devices “accessories”, but the two boxes are anything but. One, the StreamBox (not to be confused with the Steam Box), is designed to let users easily share media from a mobile device to a TV or computer. The other, the RAIDbox, is an external storage enclosure in a small form factor. The StreamBox DM01 runs on a RealTek SoC and features DLNA/Airfun streaming technology, Miracast compatibility for display mirroring, USB file playback capabilities, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi , and 10/100 Ethernet. ZOTAC StreamBox Android users will get to use this box with... Read more...
Researchers with Kaspersky Labs have released information on a new botnet they've discovered that dwarfs any previous cyber-espionage efforts as far as its size, scope, and complexity. The new network, dubbed Red October, has sunk its hooks into systems worldwide. The degree of penetration varies from state to state -- in the United States, the leaks were apparently confined to diplomatic offices and embassies, while in Russia, intrusions were picked up in military installations, embassies, nuclear power plants, and in research institutions. Elements of the Red October network have apparently been in play since 2007. Red October is the latest major cyber-espionage network detected worldwide.... Read more...
