Like just about every other major technology firm, Intel sees a lot of promise in artificial intelligence, and is making investments in the category. That is on display today at the Hot Chips conference, where Intel unveiled the first two processors comprising its Nervana Neural Network (NNP) line, including one for training (NNP-T) and one for inference (NNP-I). Dubbed "Spring Crest," Intel built its Nervana NNP-T from the ground up to train deep learning models at scale. It is designed to prioritize training networks as quickly as possible, and do it within a given power budget, Intel says. The chip is also designed with flexibility in mind, to offer a balance between compute, communication,... Read more...
Today, Intel announced something that it hopes will help in the fight against NVIDIA in the AI market. Intel's new processor is called the Nervana Neural Network Processor, and previously went by the codename "Lake Crest." Intel says that it has been working to make the Nervana processor for three years and it is now ready to reveal some details on the processor. Nervana is a purpose-built architecture for deep learning and the primary goal for the hardware team was to provide flexibility needed for deep learning primitives and to make the core hardware as efficient as possible. Intel says that it designed Nervana to cut the chains holding back existing hardware not specifically designed... Read more...
If you had any previous concerns about the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) for the future advancement of technology, look at how the major players are jockeying for position. Earlier this month, Intel purchased machine vision company Mobileye to get its hands on 70 percent of the market for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in self-driving vehicles. Today, Intel announced that it is consolidating its AI efforts into a single group that reports directly to CEO Brian Krzanich. Leading the new Artificial Intelligence Products Group (AIPG) is Naveen Rao, who served as CEO of Nervana, which was acquired by Intel in August 2016 for $400 million. The Nervana acquisition brought Intel... Read more...
Intel is laying a roadmap for to advance artificial intelligence performance across the board. Nervana Systems, a company that Intel acquired just a few months ago, will play a pivotal role in the company’s efforts to make waves in an industry dominated by GPU-based solutions. Intel’s Nervana chips incorporate technology (which involves a fully-optimized software and hardware stack) that is specially tasked with reducing the amount of time required to train deep learning models. Nervana hardware will initially be available as an add-in card that plugs into a PCIe slot, which is the quickest way for Intel to get this technology to customers. The first Nervana silicon, codenamed Lake... Read more...
