Microsoft may have given up on Windows 10 Mobile in order to focus the bulk of its software and services development for iOS and Android, but there are still quite a few people that are holding on to smartphones like the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. Those Lumia devices were among the last to ship with Windows 10 Mobile, and while they still "work" per se, they aren't being updated with new features and aren't nearly as capable as the Android and iOS peers. So, what is someone to do with an old Lumia 950 XL that they may have lying around? Install Windows 10 on ARM, of course! Software developer Gustave Monce has been working on bringing the full-blown Windows 10 on ARM experience to... Read more...
It looks as though Microsoft is finally removing the limited time price cuts and special offers for its Windows 10 Mobile flagships. After months of temporary price reductions and buy one get one free offers, Microsoft has instituted a permanent price cut for the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The Lumia 950 was originally priced at $549, and has now been reduced to $399. The range-topping Lumia 950 XL has seen its price fall from $649 to $499. Some would argue that these prices are still too high for smartphones that are running what many see as an also-ran operating system. Microsoft has less than one percent of the global smartphone market and app developers haven’t exactly embraced the Windows... Read more...
There was probably a time in the not too distant past when Microsoft thought it would be a viable contender in the mobile handset market by now. That was before reality slapped the Redmond outfit in the face like a stinky trout, and that reality is that the vast majority of consumers are interested in Android and iOS devices. Where the does that leave Microsoft with its Lumia devices? Microsoft isn't giving up, but it is giving handsets away.If you purchase a Lumia 950 XL from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft will toss in an unlocked Lumia 950 handset for free. That's a $549 value, a compelling deal if you and a significant other were already interested in the Lumia 950 XL or Lumia 950. The only... Read more...
If you’re a fan of the Windows 10 Mobile operating system, and especially the Lumia 950 XL flagship smartphone (read Marco’s review right here), then you’ll likely want to jump on Microsoft's latest promotion. Microsoft is knocking $150 off the 5.7-inch Lumia 950 XL, which brings its price down to just $499. For those keeping score, this new pricing undercuts the smaller 5.2-inch Lumia 950 by $50. To further sweeten the deal, Microsoft is also throwing in a Display Dock for free — this would normally set you back an additional $99. While the $150 discount and free Display Dock is no doubt an excellent deal, it pales in comparison to last month’s offer that gave customers purchasing... Read more...
When it comes to smartphone operating systems, there’s Android and iOS — and then, there’s everybody else. BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile are both in the low single digits (or lower) and have failed to gain any significant traction in the marketplace in recent years. Despite the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is continually evolving and getting better as the year progresses, Microsoft made it clear that mobile isn’t a primary focus at this time. "We're fully committed to that 4-inch screen, there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year," said Microsoft's... The market hasn't shown a ton of interest in Microsoft's Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets so the Redmond outfit is making an offer it hopes customers will have a tougher time refusing. If you purchase an unlocked Lumia 950 XL smartphone from the Microsoft Store, Microsoft will throw in an unlocked Lumia 950 handset at no additional cost. That's a savings of $549, the retail cost of the slightly smaller Lumia 950, though you'll have to pony up a premium-tier $649 for the Lumia XL handset. The deal is in play until either May 1, 2016 or when Microsoft depletes its inventory, the latter of which seems to be the purpose behind the promotion.Lumia handsets haven't been jumping off of store shelves.... The company announced that it will soon be giving customers a free one-year subscription to Office 365 Personal as a gift for purchasing its latest flagship smartphones. Within five days of singing up, Microsoft will send you promotional code (which... Read more...
Microsoft is quickly trying to wrap up testing of its Windows 10 Mobile operating system in preparation for a wide-scale public rollout to existing Lumia smartphones later this month. However, those who already have Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 Mobile flagships — the Lumia 950 and 950 XL — in hand have encountered some problems with Build 10586.29, which was released earlier this month. A number of users have witnessed “false low storage notifications” during the installation process along with getting stuck at 0 percent when trying to update their devices. These are not isolated occurrences, and they were frequent enough that Microsoft has pulled the build for both Windows Insiders and Lumia... Read more...

The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are important products for Microsoft, but not for the reasons you may expect. Microsoft isn’t trying to set the mobile market ablaze with these two smartphones. They are not necessarily meant to be explosive sales successes that take significant market share from Android and iOS. If they were, Microsoft would have thrown huge amounts of marketing muscle and dollars behind them, launched a massive advertising campaign, and worked deals with every major wireless carrier it could. But Microsoft didn't.  The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are more about laying a foundation and setting the direction and course for Windows 10 Mobile as well as Microsoft’s latest mobile strategy.... Let’s face it, buyers aren’t exactly flocking to Microsoft’s smartphone operating systems. According to IDC, Windows Phone is currently sitting at 2.6 percent worldwide smartphone market share compared to 15.6 percent and 81.1 percent for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android respectively. Even though Microsoft is expected to grow its share slightly to 3.3 percent by 2019, IDC says that its “view that Microsoft/Windows Phone will remain a marginal challenger at best has not changed.” With all of this in mind, we’re starting to get a little better picture of why Verizon Wireless was reticent to offer Microsoft’s new Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones, which run the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system.... Smartphone makers have been obsessed with making handsets increasingly thin and light, but what about battery life? After all, a smartphone isn't very useful if it runs out of juice. With that in mind, Microsoft is laying out some high expectations for its new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL handsets, both of which it says "can keep up with you to help you do great things."In a blog post talking about battery life, Microsoft begins by pointing out the large capacity batteries it picked out for its first Windows 10 phones. The Lumia 950 rocks a 3,000 mAh battery and the Lumia 950 XL gets a more capacious 3,340 mAh unit. They're both rated to deliver up to 19 hours of talk time (3G) and can last up... Read more...
We — along with countless other observers — have questioned Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile strategy before, but it doesn’t seem like the company has any intentions of adding new launch partners for its Lumia 950 and 950 XL flagship Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. The phone will only be available on contract or with carrier financing via AT&T. You can get an unlocked version off-contract, but you’ll have to pay full retail price for the handset ($549 for the Lumia 950, $649 for the Lumia 950 XL) and purchase it from a Microsoft Store. Unshaken by the critics, Microsoft and AT&T announced today that the Lumia 950 will be be available exclusively in AT&T retail stores starting November... Read more...
Given that Microsoft has seen its fortunes in the smartphone market dwindle as Android and iOS have risen to become a duopoly (the company has low single-digit global market share), you would think that the Microsoft would be banging on the doors of every carrier that it could find to get its smartphones into the hands of customers. But the company seemingly wants to keep strapping a 20-pound weight to one leg as it attempts to compete with Google and Apple which are sprinting ahead at a rapid clip. Look no further than the announcement of the Lumia 950 and 950 XL earlier this week. It was revealed that AT&T will be the only U.S. carrier allowed to sell the smartphones. Customers will be...
