The Internet is defiantly abuzz over yesterday’s release of Windows 10. The operating system was made available as a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, and can be obtained via Windows Update, ISO, or through the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool. But while Windows 10 Home and Pro will appease the vast majority of desktop, laptop, convertible, and tablet users, there are still millions of people around the globe with smartphones running Window Phone 8.1. Microsoft promised that Windows 10 Mobile would be made available later this year as a free upgrade for Windows Phone users, and the company is now giving us an idea of which devices will be eligible for the new operating system. After making available a Technical Preview of Windows 10 for just a handful of Lumia handsets in February (just half a dozen), Microsoft a month and a half later opened the floodgates with a new build supporting dozens of phones, including the popular Lumia 520. Well, bad news folks -- the update is no longer available for Lumia 520 owners. The same goes for Lumia 525 and Lumia 526 owners, all of which are having problems when users try to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. Due to receiving reports of failures associated with those specific models, Microsoft made the decision pause update availability while it looks into the problem. This is in reference to the... It's been a roller coaster of ups and downs in trying to figure out which Windows Phone devices will receive an update to Windows 10 when it comes out, and the situation seems to change by the week. As it stands right now, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore says the Redmond outfit is working on a Windows 10 update for low-end devices with only 512MB of RAM, though cautions that "features may vary." That includes the popular Lumia 520, an affordable handset with a respectable feature-set for the money. It's only $29 at the Microsoft Store or $40 from Amazon, both of which represent no-contract pricing. The phone itself sports a 4-inch display with an 800x480 resolution, Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor... Read more...
We thought that the Nokia Lumia 520 hit rock bottom pricing when it was made available for a mere $29 from the Microsoft Store earlier this month. But we were [thankfully] wrong -- Amazon is now offering Microsoft's entry-level smartphone for a bargain basement price of $19.99. Everyone thought that the Lumia was a true bargain when it was offered at the "low" price of $39.99 this past summer, and we doubt that anyone would scoff at another 50 percent reduction in pricing. As we've indicated previously, the Lumia 520 was first announced back in 2013, and its budget-minded hardware wasn't exactly cutting edge during its release. Today, the Lumia 520's 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB of RAM... Read more...
The Microsoft-branded Lumia 535 is the most recent budget smartphone entry from Redmond, Washington (it seems as though all we’ve been getting lately from Microsoft are budget- and mid-range models), but it’s an older member of the Windows Phone family that’s getting a fresh price cut today. The Lumia 520 was available for a respectable $39.99 this summer from Amazon, but the Microsoft Store is now selling the phone off-contract for a mere $29. You can use the smartphone with you existing AT&T service or with a prepaid SIM via GoPhone. The Lumia 520 was announced in April 2013, and won’t win and beauty pageants or specs wars. It comes with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of... Read more...
