There is quite a controversy brewing in the Apple community today, and it is specifically related to the batteries and the performance of older iPhones. It's a given that a smartphone's battery performance will deteriorate over time, but some iPhone users are alleging that not only have their iPhones lost battery life over the years (which is to be expected), but that overall system performance has also suffered as a result. A reddit thread has popped up in which redditor TeckFire alleges that his iPhone 6 Plus had been slug-like in performance since upgrading to iOS 11. Anecdotally, iPhone users tend to complain every year when a new iOS release becomes public, alleging that Apple is purposely... Read more...
We are not trying to spark of war of words between iOS and Android users, but when it comes to platform fragmentation, it does not really exist in the iPhone community. What is equally remarkable, however, is how quickly iPhone owners adopt major iOS updates. According to the latest data from Mixpanel, iOS 11 has found its way onto around half of all iPhone (and presumably iPad) devices in less than a month. The data trend shows iOS 11 and iOS 10 both bouncing around the 44 percent, but at its peak earlier today, iOS 11 adoption reached 49.28 percent, versus 46.58 percent for iOS 10, and just 4.15 percent for all other versions of Apple's mobile operating system. That is good news for developers,... Read more...
When Apple introduced the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last month, it added a better display, faster processor, improved Taptic engine, better battery life, IP67 dust/water resistance, and improved cameras (along with optical image stabilization on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 — something that was missing on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s). Apple also took away a couple of things — namely the 3.5mm headphone jack (which upset a lot of people) and a mechanical home button. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus did away with the physical switch mechanism that has been with the home button since the iPhone was introduced in 2007, and instead introduced a stationary, pressure sensitive “button” that is tied to the iPhone’s... A start-up that sells security exploits to government agencies is willing to pay big money for remote hacks on iOS 10, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system. Specifically, the top award is now an eye popping $1.5 million, or three times the previous award, for remote hacks that work against up-do-date iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 10. The company is called Zerodium. It bills itself as the premium exploit acquisition platform for high-end zero-days and advanced vulnerability research. Zerodium's only been in business for a year but is well known in tech circles for its controversial business model and open advertising of seeking exploits for specific reward amounts, which... Apple bills iOS 10 as being “More personal. More powerful. More playful.” It’s hard to argue with that train of thought, given the features that Apple has infused into the mobile operating system including a totally revamped iMessage app, rich notifications, third-party app integration with Siri, more useful 3D Touch actions, and other various tweaks and additions. However, at least one area in iOS 10 has seen a bit of a regression compared to previous versions, and it could leave your iPhone and iPad data less secure than before. We know that some of the world’s best hackers come from Russia, so we’re taking this latest report from Russian firm ElcomSoft very seriously. Researchers for the company... Read more...
It’s been nearly a month since Apple first announced iOS 10 for its mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, etc.) and macOS Sierra for desktops and notebooks. Developers were given immediate access to the first beta of each operating system (along with a beta of watchOS 3) at WWDC, and Apple promised that the general public would gain access to the software later in the summer. True to its word, Apple is today providing the public with the first betas of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. Both are based the respective Beta 2 dev branch builds of the operating systems, which were released earlier this week. macOS Sierra introduces a number of new features including the first appearance of Siri for Macs,... More than 120,000 people in the United States are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. On average, twenty-two people die a day without one. Apple is hoping to reduce this number by adding a organ donor signup button within its Health information app that comes installed on every iPhone. The button is being introduced in collaboration with Donate Life, a non-profit national organization committed to increasing organ, eye and tissue donation. The app update will be introduced this week to software developers who have requested early access to iOS 10. It will be available on all iPhones this autumn when iOS 10 is released to the general public. Another new button will link to information about... Read more...
Apple today announced the latest version of its popular mobile operating system: iOS 10. If you were looking for a drastic design overhaul of the iOS UI like we saw with iOS 7, you’re going to be disappointed. However, Apple has added a wealth of features to iOS 10 that are sure to please the faithful, but likely won’t be enough to court those firmly entrenched in the Android camp. Apple broke down the new edition to iOS 10 into ten categories, which will detail below: User Experience: Apple has introduced a Raise to Wake feature for iOS to help alleviate a problem that some people have had with the iPhone 6s when it comes to viewing notifications. Touch ID is so quick at recognizing your fingerprint... Read more...
Compared to rival digital assistants like Google Now and Cortana, Apple’s Siri can often seem like it’s stuck in the past. While Apple has added some nifty functionality to Siri since it was first introduced with iOS 5 in 2011, Siri will get a significant “intelligence” overhaul this fall with iOS 9, and will become more proactive it helping you navigate your daily life. However, one new Siri feature is a little bit further away, and again shows Apple playing catchup in certain aspects to the likes of Google. The new functionality is called iCloud Voicemail and taps into Siri’s already robust voice recognition services to transcribe incoming voicemails. Whereas Siri right now sends rather mundane...
