One of the best advantages of shopping online is that consumers, when it comes to most online retailers, do not have to pay sales tax. Of course, that could all change as the U.S. Congress has been looking into the issue of Internet taxes that encompass both online state sales taxes and online access taxes but for now, the debate is being postponed until 2015. Thousands of Hungarian citizens took to the streets in Budapest to protest against the pending Internet tax that was being debated by the established regime. As a result of the protests, Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the Hungarian media that the internet tax will be removed from the country’s budget. "This tax in its current form cannot be introduced because the government wanted to extend a telecommunications tax, but the people see an internet tax," Orban said on public radio. Last week, Hungary revealed plans to impose a tax on internet data transfers as a way to restore the public finances. However, thousands of Hungarian citizens gathered in the center of Budapest on Sunday to protest the impending tax proposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s regime making it one of the largest anti-government demonstrations since Prime Minister Orban came to power in 2010.
