Perhaps it is just a coincidence that we're starting to hear a lot more about electric cars these days now that gas prices have hit record highs. Coincidence or not, automobiles that offer alternatives to traditional fossil-fuel-based, internal combustion engines are gearing up to hit the streets. The latest entrant to this quickly growing field is U.K.-based, Lightning Car Company, which debuted its Electric Lightning GT today at the British Motor Show in London. Similar to the all-electric, high-performance Tesla Roadster that is now available the Electric Lightning GT will also be a high-performance vehicle--and carry a similar, high-performance price tag. News.com reports that the Electric... Read more...
Greater Value Than Ever BeforeOntario, Calif., July 15, 2008 - In response to recent market fluctuations, XFX is taking the history-making stance of offering up to $120 cash back to its dedicated technology-forward customers who purchased its GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards between June 16, 2008 and July 11, 2008. This offer is available only to customers and purchases in the US and Canada. Rules and certain restrictions apply."Market conditions in recent days have caused the price of these two graphics cards to drop significantly," explains XFX USA President, Eddie Memon. "However these cards were just introduced to our customers a few weeks ago. We want to thank our customers... Read more...
Just before the July 4 Independence Day holiday, we broke some news that stated NVIDIA had plans to drastically reduce prices on their flagship GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 graphics cards.  Then a few days later, sure enough, the rumor became fact and prices dropped significantly for both products.Anytime a halo product like the GTX 200 series gets treated to a major price cut so close to its initial release, early adopters are inevitably disappointed.  After all, they paid a price premium for a product that almost immediately lost a large chunk of its value.  Heck, in the tech sector, such moves can even spur lawsuits from disgruntles customers. To show their appreciate of those... It looks like the news we broke last week regarding GeForce GTX 200 series pricing has already taken effect at a couple of on-line retailers.  We just did a quick search at NewEgg and found that a handful of GeForce GTX 260 cards are priced between $299 and $339, which puts them right about on-par with the roughly $310 Radeon HD 4870.  Although, the least expensive of the bunch (MSI's $299 GeForce GTX 260) appears to have already sold out. Many GeForce GTX 280 cards have also dropped in price too.  As you can see here, the $499 we quoted last week was right on the money, and a number of others are priced only slightly higher at about $519 to $539. And MSI's offering is priced even... Read more...
Over the last couple of days, there have been some rumblings around the web that NVIDIA is planning to drop the price of their recently launched GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280 cards in response to AMD's potent, and more affordable, Radeon HD 4800 series.  The actual numbers quoted have varied, but today we heard some news directly from multiple NVIDIA board partners that pricing on the GeForce GTX 280 may actually be dropping to as low as $499--a significant drop from the $649 launch price. Unfortunately, we were unable to confirm a price for the GTX 260, but we suspect it will hover somewhere around the $299 - $339 price points to better compete with the Radeon HD 4870.   Upon hearing... On Thursday, the same day that AMD unveiled - early - its 4800 series of cards (because some etailers were already selling the card), NVIDIA decided it just had to unveil its own new card, as well as some other good news.NVIDIA's new card is the GeForce 9800 GTX+ GPU, an overclocked 9800 GTX, but really the 55nm refresh of the G92. NVIDIA increased default clock/shader speeds: from 675MHz to 738MHz and from 1688MHz to 1836MHz respectively. Memory speeds for this card will be 1100MHz, similar to the existing 9800 GTX. The MSRP will be $229, and it will hit store shelves in mid-July. At the same time the 9800 GTX's price will be dropped to $199, matching AMD's 4850 MSRP.          ... Read more...
NVIDIA has taken the wraps of their latest high-end GPU today and we've got complete coverage for your, from architecture to some impressive benchmark numbers we're sure you'll all enjoy. While the GT200 does borrow heavily from previous generation GPU architectures, it is simply in a class of its own at the moment.  And as you'll see, the jump in performance is similar to what we've all gotten use to and experienced again, when the GeForce 8800 GTX was first introduced.  The first two cards based on the GT200 GPU architecture are the GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 260.  As their names suggest, the GTX 260 is a pared down version of the flagship GTX 280.  And the GTX 280... NVIDIA has held  a dominant position in the high-end GPU space ever since the introduction of the G80 architecture back in November of 2006.  When the G80 first arrived in the form of the GeForce 8800 GTX and the pared-down GeForce 8800 GTS, the cards were clearly superior to anything else at the time in terms of both performance and features.  As time has passed, rival ATI has closed the gap somewhat with the Radeon HD 3800 series, and has even surpassed NVIDIA in some ways, for example with  DX10.1 and native HDMI with audio support, but through it all NVIDIA offered enthusiast gamers what they arguably desired most - high performance.  And it shows in the discreet... We have just posted a new article here at HotHardware in which we expand our coverage of the GeForce 9600 GT by doing another round-up of three retail cards: the PNY Verto 9600 GT, the MSI N9600GT OC, and the ASUS EN9600GT SILENT. As you might expect, all three of these cards sport 512MB of GDDR3 and a 256-bit memory interface. What you may not expect is how different these three cards actually are. Two feature custom coolers, one of which is passive, making it silent. Because of their custom coolers, two of the cards are dual-slot solutions while the third uses the single-slot reference cooler. Only one of them ships with a factory overclock while the other two utilize NVIDIA's reference clocks. ... Read more...
NVIDIA's GeForce 9 Series was first introduced in February of this year by way of the 9600 GT launch. Admittedly, we thought it was interesting to see a new GeForce series launch, not with the flagship card, but rather with a new midrange offering. It makes perfect sense, though, considering that more people can afford midrange cards than can afford high-end, flagship cards. Since this launch, NVIDIA has added to the GeForce 9 Series by introducing the dual-GPU GeForce 9800 GX2 and the GeForce 9800 GTX. So far, the GeForce 9 Series seems to be another successful line from the NVIDIA camp.   In this article, we are going to expand our coverage of the GeForce 9600 GT by doing another... Read more...

Grand Theft Auto IV sold six million copies in its first week alone, netting $500 million for its publisher, Take-Two Interactive. That's even better than the wildest estimates by industry pundits, and probably will make Electronic Arts' bid to purchase Take Two a whole lot more expensive. The significance of the sales extends beyond buoying Take-Two, a company that has had its share of legal, financial and management struggles in the last few years. The company is the subject of a $2 billion hostile takeover effort by Electronic Arts, which is offering Take Two shareholders $25.74 a share for control of the company. If Take-Two can exceed sales expectations on Grand Theft Auto IV, it has the... Read more...
Wait, wait, Barack, it's a game.  They're not wasting real gasoline.  Oh, wait, that's not his point.Obama's comments came during a campaign stop in Indianapolis. He told the crowd, "I was just catching the news this morning about Grand Theft Auto, this video game, which is gonna break all records and make goo-gobs of money for whoever designed it."Now, this isn’t intended for kids, although I promise you there are kids who are playing it, but these video games are raising our kids," Obama continued. "Across the board, middle-class, upper-class, working-class kids, they’re spending a huge amount of their time not on their studies, but on entertainment. "While he has some good points,... It's not the same as the "Hot Coffee" scandal, but it's something. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has Grand Theft Auto IV in its sights over the inclusion of a drunk driving module in the game.Noting that drunk driving claims nearly 13,500 lives each year, MADD said that it is "extremely disappointed" that the game lets users get virtually drunk and then get behind the wheel of an equally virtual automobile."Drunk driving is not a game and it is not a joke," MADD said. "Drunk driving is a choice, a violent crime, and it is also 100 percent preventable."MADD is asking the Entertainment Software Rating Board to bump Grand Theft Auto IV's rating up to AO for Adults Only from M for Mature.... Grand Theft Auto IV has created a frenzy of news stories, including rave reviews and record sales, but the one that has gamers hot under the collar: freezes.Last month, the launch of Rockstar Games' Bully on the Xbox 360 was marred by a bevy of crash bugs and other glitches. With this morning's heavily anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto IV for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Rockstar finds itself dealing with still more troubleshooting trouble, as online forums are buzzing with reports of crashes.Reports are that the 60GB PS3 is most likely to see this issue.  Rockstar's only workaround for now, deleting the game data and reinstalling, also isn't working for all.  More to come.... Apple has almost always had a reputation for not pushing new hardware on ‘old’ platforms, but to be fair, they’ve never really had the opportunity to update platforms quite as frequently as they have under their present partnership with Intel.   As a result, the company is starting to offer new hardware products such as the 8800GT video cards for older machines, such as the original Mac Pros. The 8800GT available on current models ships with a 64-bit EFI which isn’t compatible with the ‘older’ Mac Pros.  Here’s Apple’s marketing blurb for the 8800GT for the ‘old’ Mac Pro:For advanced graphics performance, choose the latest-generation NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 video memory.  With... NVIDIA is officially taking the wraps off of their new GeForce 9800 GTX card today.  With its predecessor, the GeForce 8800 GTX's, excellent pedigree the new GeForce 9800 GTX certainly has some pretty big shoes to fill.  Its name alone will make many users assume the GeForce 9800 GTX is NVIDIA's new flagship single GPU powered graphics card.  And technically it is.  But we all know what happens when people assume. Thankfully, there's no longer a need to make any assumptions.  We've got a trio of GeForce 9800 GTX cards in-house from NVIDIA's partners BFG, EVGA, and Zogis and have put them to the test with some of today's popular games running at XHD resolutions in single... NVIDIA's onslaught of new graphics cards based on the company's G92 graphics processor continues today with the introduction of the GeForce 9800 GTX.  As its name suggests, the GeForce 9800 GTX is the successor to the wildly popular and unusually long-lived GeForce 8800 GTX.We're sure you all know by now that the GeForce 8800 GTX was introduced in November of 2006 and sat unrivaled at the top of the 3D graphics food chain until the 8800 Ultra was released, which was essentially the same card with a different cooler and higher clock speeds.  From an enthusiast's standpoint, the GeForce 8800 GTX must be looked at as nothing but an overwhelming success.  Regardless of the actual sales... NVIDIA's 9600GT has had a dramatic impact since its arrival, showing performance that a sub $200 video card provide surprising levels of performance.“Since then retailers such as Newegg cut pricing below the original MSRP of $169-189, down to $150 on NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT models. In response to this, AMD is set to cut prices yet again on its Radeon HD 3800 line. Independent retailers tell DailyTech they are receiving partner pressure to drop the price on these cards below the corporate pricing set just a few weeks ago.”With prices dropping this quickly on both NVIDIA and AMD cards, we can certainly see a lot more users willing to take the leap and try SLI and Crossfire configurations out for the...
