For the first time since it began developing discrete GPUs for the modern era, Intel has powered on a DG1 graphics card it built from the ground up, Intel CEO Bob Swan told investors during a conference call. He dubbed it "an important milestone," and he's not wrong, given all that is at stake with Intel's venture into discrete GPUs. Technically, this is not Intel's first foray into the category. Around a decade ago, Intel was busy developing a discrete GPU called Larrabee. It was dogged by delays, though, and Intel quickly pivoted away from its strategy of building Larrabee as a consumer product, and not long after it was scrapped altogether, leaving enthusiasts to wonder 'what if?' ever since.... Make no mistake folks, Intel is serious about competing in the discrete graphics space starting in 2020, which is when the company anticipates launching its first discrete GPU solution. Whether Intel kicks things off with a professional graphics card or a consumer oriented one remains to be seen. Either way, Intel wants to get this right, and it's been actively engaging with the online community to make sure it's headed in the direction users want it to go. More than a marketing stunt, Intel was seen taking the feedback it solicited from a recent AYA (Ask YOU Anything) session on Reddit and sharing it with the company's GPU engineers. These are exciting times we live in. If you've been out of... Read more...
Earlier this month, we learned that AMD Senior Marketing Director Chris Hook was leaving his position at AMD. Hook had been with AMD (and formerly, ATI) in various positions for nearly two decades, which is a long time to spend at one company in the tech business. At the time, we highly suspected that Hook would be taking his talents to Intel. After all, Hook worked closely with Raja Koduri in the Radeon Technologies Group, and Koduri defected to Intel in late 2017 to lead the new Core and Visual Computing Group. It appears that our supposition was correct, as Hook today confirmed that he is now one of Intel's newest employees. His official duties now include "Discrete Graphics... Read more...
An AMD "lifer" is saying goodbye and is moving on to a new venture outside of the company. AMD veteran Chris Hook, who currently serves as the company's Senior Director of Global Product Marketing is leaving the company that he has called home since 2001. Hook joined ATI (before the AMD acquisition) in his late 20s and quickly moved up the ranks to help promote the company's wide range of computing and graphics products. He has served in his current role since October 2017, and previously oversaw marketing specific to the Radeon graphics brand (aka Radeon Technologies Group). In a Facebook post, Hook joked that when he first joined the company, "ATI still had a smoking room, there was only... Read more...
There is an immense amount of excitement building around AMD's next generation Vega GPU architecture, both from outside observers like us and from within. As to the latter, AMD's senior vice president and chief architect of its Radeon Technologies Group, Raja Koduri, and the division's senior marketing director, Chris Hook, both teased a Vega announcement on Twitter that is expected later today. Starting with the head honcho, here is what Koduri threw out to the social media space: Ok..complete the sentence..we stand today on the edge of a ......
