For the last several years, CNET has been coordinating the CES product awards at that big annual electronics show in Las Vegas (you may have heard it mentioned around here a few times), but that arrangement has abruptly ended. According to Boston.com, the Consumer Electronics Agency (CEA), which runs the show, will not be asking CNET back next year because it believes that CNET’s parent company, CBS Corp., interfered with this year’s award selection process. The display format previously known as 4K will now and forever be referred to as "Ultra High-Definition," or Ultra HD for short. So says the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), which has bestowed upon the next-generation format its official consumer designation, approved via a unanimous vote by the organization's Board of Industry Leaders. The designation is intended to help consumers and retailers "understand the attributes" of 4K TV sets. We don't want to go so far as to call the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas the Rocky Balboa of technology conventions, but let's face it, there's a bit of uncertainty in regards to its longevity. In the past few years, CES didn't seem to bustle to the same extent it once did, and the gut punch this year came when Microsoft announced this would be the last time it would have a major presence at the show, giving up its floor space and not committing to future keynotes. We all know that today's flat-screen TVs weigh far less than old-style CRTs, or they wouldn't be able to hang on the wall. New research from the Consumer Electronics Association finds that this translates into a massive savings of electronics waste. The report found that today’s flat screen TVs are 82% lighter and 75% smaller than cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs. In other words, 40- to 70-inch flat-panel TVs weigh 34% less than 13- to 36-inch CRT TVs. Plasma TVs have also gotten dramatically lighter. They weighed 125 pounds on average in 2004. There's great news all around coming from the Consumer Electronics Association, which has just published an annual report on American spending in the world of consumer electronics. Without a doubt, 2009 was a rough year for most, and while technology didn't suffer too bad in the grand scheme of things, pains were still felt.
