Are Super Micro server motherboards safe from Chinese spies? A recent audit has determined that the Super Micro motherboards are indeed free of malicious microchips, running contrary to an explosive Bloomberg Businessweek article that made waves in early October. The company sent a letter to its customers and assured them that “no evidence” has been found of wrongdoing. A report from Bloomberg claimed that that Chinese spies had planted malicious microchips on Super Micro motherboards. According to a London-based analyst with research firm Strategy Analytics, which itself is based in Boston, MA, Samsung may have sold more smartphones than both Nokia and Apple globally in Q2. The analyst, Neil Mawston, claimed in an e-mail response that Samsung sold an estimated 18 to 21 million smartphones this past quarter due to Samsung’s strong worldwide market presence and demand for Android-based devices. Sales data in a Bloomberg story outlining Mawston’s response suggests Nokia sold roughly 16.7 million units in the same time frame, to Apple’s 20.3 million. The question of what's next for AMD took an interesting twist this morning as the company's stock rose ~ five percent on the rumor that Dell might be interested in acquiring the CPU designer. To say 2011 has been a tumultuous year for AMD thus far would be an understatement; the company has launched major new products, fired its CEO, turned in a solid Q4 2010, and dismissed two additional board members all in the last six weeks.
