AI can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what the AI is designed to do. Many AIs are meant to do things like help doctors diagnose disease, though other AI technologies can be turned towards more nefarious deeds. For example, a team of IEEE researchers has devised a method of harnessing an AI to generate fake fingerprints that work like a master key, to bypass the biometric locks that are employed on smartphones. The team notes that the attack using their AI-driven method can be issued against random devices "with some probability of success." In an effort to lock down our devices with better security, fingerprint scanning is growing in popularity. Unfortunately, as it exists in many current smartphones, including Samsung's previous generation Galaxy S5 device, this type of biometric security may have a severe security flaw, as researchers from security outfit FireEye will present in more detail this week at RSA.According to a report in Forbes, FireEye is planning to talk about how affected handsets encrypt fingerprint data in a separate secure zone. Once the information is in there, it's virtually untouchable by hackers, but it's the ability to hijack the data along the way that has FireEye's researchers concerned about the overall... At Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June, iOS 7 was unveiled to the world. While the masses were told they would have to wait until autumn to get their hands around it, developers were granted access to an early beta right away. As the days pass, Apple engineers are getting closer and closer to having a final version ready for release. The latest beta, v4, was just issued to devs globally, and it's arguably the biggest jump yet. Many developers are suggesting that iOS 7 Beta 4 finally feels polishing and nearly ready for release, and the hinted feature set is worth appreciating. For starters, the button layout has been tweaked in iOS 7 Beta 4, with slightly less transparency and more... Read more...
It’s an obvious solution to a rampant problem, and indeed, biometric security measures will be coming to more and more mobile devices in the near future. As we rely more on our smartphones for everything from communications to content consumption to banking, there’s a deep well of data parked on or connected to those little computers we carry around everywhere. And that’s just on the consumer level; at the enterprise level, phones may contain confidential company communications, private employee data, and corporate secrets. Yet for some reason, too many of us don’t bother to even set a weak password to protect them, even though the risk of loss or theft is incredibly high... Read more...
