While all the eyes in the tech industry are focused on the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week, Apple still found a way to make headlines, though not by releasing new hardware. Instead, Apple chose today, the day before CES officially kicks off, to announce that its App Store has notched more than a mind boggling 40 billion app downloads to date. Nearly half of those have come in 2012 alone, a particularly explosive year for Apple which saw the launch of the iPad mini and iPhone 5, both of which introduced new screen sizes to their respective family of products.
