Amazon is delving deeper into brick-and-mortar territory with a blockbuster acquisition. The company announced today that it is purchasing U.S. supermarket chain Whole Foods for $13.7 billion. Although final details of the transaction will be ironed out between the grocer’s shareholders, the Whole Foods branding will remain intact. Residents of Northern New Jersey are the newest to benefit from Amazon's local grocery delivery service. Known as AmazonFresh (one word), Amazon seems to have expanded into several new ZIP codes, including those for Hoboken, Weekawken, Jersey City, Newark, Paramus, Edison, Montclair, and New Brunswick, all of which are located in the northern part of New Jersey.It was a quiet expansion -- Amazon didn't make a big splash with a press release or any other kind of announcement. The Amazon Fire TV isn’t the only intriguing new tech to come out of Amazon this week. The company is also debuting a powerful new shopping tool called Amazon Dash, and it portends a future where you can order all the groceries and supplies you need as you go and as you think of them. Dash is a small handheld device that connects to your home WiFi network and can both scan barcodes on the products in your house and also receive voice commands from the user. When you run out of, say, milk, you can scan the barcode on the empty carton.
