WhatsApp Claims To Have Sent 64 Billion Messages In 24 Hours
"New daily record: 20 billion messages (inbound) and 44 billion messages received (outbound) by our users equals 64 billion messages handled in just 24 hours," WhatsApp announced in a Twitter post.
To be clear, WhatsApp had to play with the numbers a bit to come to that figure. WhatsApp counts single messages sent to a group as separate received messages, which is why the number of sent and received messages differ from each other. Still, these are some impressive stats and it shows why Facebook is willing to spend a planet's ransom on the instant messaging service.
At last count, WhatsApp earlier this year said it surpassed 465 million monthly active users. The instant messaging service is also planning to add voice calling capabilities later this quarter, which could open up a whole new revenue stream for Facebook, depending on how it's rolled out.
