Steam Link App Aims To Bring Glorious PC Game Streaming To Your Mobile Devices

Valve just dropped a bit of exciting gaming news on us this afternoon. The company announced its new Steam Link app, which will allow you to stream PC or Mac games from your main computer to your smartphone, tablet, or even to your Apple TV. Valve says that the app will initially be available for iOS, Android (as a beta initially) and tvOS starting on May 21st.

However, game streaming (from the host PC or Mac) will only be able to take place over a 5GHz home Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection for gaming. But even with that limitation, you'll have access to your full library of games. In addition, you'll be able to control games on your iOS device using a MFi-certified controller or with the official Steam Controller.

What's unknown at this time is if there will be support for more universal controllers that use Bluetooth; like the official Xbox One controller or the PlayStation 4 controller.

Valve also announced that a new Steam Video apps will be arriving this summer for both iOS and Android. With this app, you'll be able to stream movies and other video content available on Steam. However, unlike with the Steam Link app, you'll be able to stream over an LTE connection with Steam Video. In addition, you'll also be able to download video for offline viewing at a later time.

Back in early April, Valve removed references to its Steam Machines, which were billed as an alternative to game consoles and PCs, from its website. Despite the demotion for Steam Machines, the company says it remains committed to the Linux-based SteamOS.
