Ubisoft Owns Tom Clancy. He Doesn't Mind

Ubisoft has done very well adapting novelist and screenwriter Tom Clancy's output to video game software. Clancy's Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six series are Ubisoft's centerpiece titles. Ubisoft went all the way recently and bought the intellectual property rights to Tom Clancy's name. The immediate result was a 12% goose to Ubisoft's share price.

“The Tom Clancy brand is recognised around the world for offering exciting video games, films and books. Capitalising on the strong franchises that we’ve built over the past 10 years, we will take the Tom Clancy game brand to the next level of the global entertainment industry," stated Yves Guillemot, Chief Executive Officer at Ubisoft

Two more Tom Clancy games are scheduled to make their debut later this year: EndWar, a WWIII -themed strategy game and Tom Clancy's Air Combat.

It must be pleasant to get paid for simply having your name associated with something. Hey Ubisoft, you can buy the intellectual property rights to my name, if you like. I'm sure to be cheaper than Clancy, and the world is likely hungry for a FPS game starring a middle-aged tech writer that drinks too much coffee, can change a diaper, and knows how to get Madden Football to trade Jabar Gaffney and a second round pick for Reggie Wayne. Call me.
