Torment: Tides of Numenera Hits Most Funded Video Game on Kickstarter, No DRM

What's that, you've never heard of Torment: Tides of Numenera? That's okay, because even without your knowledge, and therefore your support, developer inXile Entertainment was still able to raise nearly $4.2 million on Kickstarter, attracting pledges from 74,405 backers. That feat qualifies it as Kickstarter's most funded video game ever.

"All of us made history yesterday, reaching a new record for the most funded video game on Kickstarter! Thank you so much for your support, both through your pledges and through your spreading the word to others," inXile Entertainment told fans after the campaign came to a close.

Torment: Tides of Numenera

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment. The lead designers of that popular cult hit originally tried to secure the rights to make a sequel, and when that attempt failed, they took to Kickstarter in hopes of raising $900,000. They more than quadrupled that goal.

It's a bit of a double-edged sword. Having blown so far past its goal -- and counting, as gamers can still donate via PayPal through the end of the month -- inXile Entertainment promised additional content, which it confirmed will push the game's release past the originally planned December 2014 launch date.

As for Kickstarter, this is yet another success story it can add to its belt. Kickstarter has proven itself a viable platform for crowd-funding, having been home to 18,000 funded projects and $320 million in pledges last year.
