Pristine Copy Of Super Mario Bros. Sells For Insane $100,150 At Auction
Way back in the day all anyone wanted for Christmas was a Nintendo Entertainment System. If you were lucky enough to get that NES, you undoubtedly wanted the Super Mario Bros. cartridge to go with it. Hoards of those video games were sold, and while we didn't know it at the time, the game would go on to be one of the most beloved video games ever made.
While you could find the standard retail boxed version of Super Mario Bros. in just about any store that sold video games, there were a pair of incredibly rare versions of the game made. These versions are so rare because instead of being sealed in shrink wrap as the games usually were, there were sold in boxes sealed with a sticker.
Only two of these versions were ever made, and they were offered for sale originally in New York and LA between 1985 and 1986. One of those two copies went up for auction recently and set a record. The unopened sticker sealed
The group was made up of various collectors and auctioneers according to reports, and one of them was a man named Jim Halperin who runs Heritage Auctions. Super Mario Bros. has reportedly sold over 40 million copies since it launched in 1985. A copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for $30,000 on eBay in 2017; it's not clear if that version was the other known sticker sealed box. Late last year a modder created Super Mario Bros. in Mario 64 letting you play the original inside its more modern kin.
