It took Spotify roughly 3 billion years to finally expand its service to the United States (the actual number is far less, it just feels like it took that long), and now that it has, should other streaming services be scared? That depends on how much stock you put into preliminary numbers from unconfirmed sources.
Citing "a source familiar with the company's operations," AllThingsD is reporting that Spotify's red, white, and blue userbase now sits at 1.4 million music buffs, which represents how many signed up for the service's free trial. Of those, 175,000 are flipping U.S. currency at Spotify each month to get rid of those pesky ads and other restrictions. That works out to a 12.5 percent conversion rate, a totally respectable number though a little shy of the 15 percent rate Spotify enjoys in Europe.
All in all, not bad for less than a month of uptime (in the U.S.), especially considering that it's by invite-only, at least for the free service (paying users don't need an invite). For the sake of comparison, Spotify says it has 1.6 million paying listeners in Europe.
