Sony PS3 Sales Decline, Revenues Drop
Sony has posted financial results for the first fiscal quarter 2012, and the company has been hurt by a decline in PS3 sales.
Fiscal Q1 revenues from game hardware, software and online services dropped 11.9% from the previous year to $1.5 billion, while unit sales of the Playstation 3 dropped to 1.8 million compared to 2.4 million the year prior. The company expects the total number of PS3 units sold this year to be 15 million, which is actually an increase from 14.3 million last year.
The Playstation 2 is still going, with 1.4 million sold in the quarter, only a little bit down from 1.6 million year-on-year, with a forecast to sell 4 million units, down from 6.4 million last year.
On the handheld side, the PSP sold 1.8 million units in fiscal Q1, up from 1.2 million last year, and is expected to sell 6 million total, down from 8 million.
Meanwhile, software sales for the PS3 increased to 26.1 million compared to 24.8 million the previous year, while PS2 sales were down to 1.5 million from 3.4 million and PSP sales were 6.6, down from 9.2. All three consoles are projected to see approximately the same number of software sales compared to last year, at 210 million across all platforms.
Overall, the company as a whole saw revenues decline to $18.5 billion, a decrease of 10% from $21.4 billion the previous year. The company also posted a total loss of $191 million compared to profits of $330 million last year, which they attributed to the earthquake earlier this year.
