Sony Passing On Android Wear For Smartwatches In Favor Of Homegrown Platform
The company is reportedly not interested in Android Wear and will instead continue developing with its own homegrown SmartWatch platform, according to a CNET interview with head of Sony Mobile US Ravi Nookala. "We've already invested time and resources on this platform, and we will continue in that direction," he said.
Sony already has a reasonably robust cadre of wearables available, including its SmartWatch, SmartWatch 2, and SmartWear devices, and it has definitely beaten Google to market in that space. However, Sony’s wearables are a slightly different beast that what Google is doing with Android Wear, and it seems shortsighted of the company to be so dogmatic about its own platform--especially since it looks like Google is about to out-innovate Sony on this one.

Variety is always a good thing for consumers, so we suppose that’s a vote for Sony to remain steadfast, but the company is making a big bet on itself here.
