Sony Makes A Splash With Mid-Range Xperia M4 Aqua Smartphone And 10-Inch Z4 Tablet

It wouldn't be like Sony to show up at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona empty handed, and it didn't. Instead, Sony brought along a couple of mobile products, including the Xperia M4 Aqua, a mid-range phone with a 5-inch display, and the Xperia X4 Tablet, a 10.1-inch slate with a 2K (2560x1600) display.

Starting with the phone, the Xperia M4 Aqua is supposed to represent Sony's "renewed mid-range focus" to the handset market with no compromises. Included among that claim is a two-day battery life and a waterproof design. It's also Sony's first smartphone with an octa-core 64-bit processor, which comes courtesy of Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 chip clocked at 1.5GHz with Adreno 405 graphics.

Others specs include a 1280x720 resolution, 2GB of RAM, 8GB or 16GB of built-in storage flanked by a microSD card slot, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera with a super wide lens for group selfies, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and your usual assortment of goodies, all wrapped up in Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The handset will come with Sony's new look Xperia Lounge Silver, bringing apps, software updates, entertainment, bespoke offers, and tips delivered throughout the product's lifecycle.

Look for the Xperia M4 Aqua to launch in 80 countries and across 100 carriers worldwide in spring for around 299 euros (around $336 in U.S. currency).

Sony's Xperia Z4 Tablet is also built on a 64-bit octa-core foundation, though it's packing a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 2GHz with Adreno 430 graphics. It sports 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 8.1-megapixel rear camera, 5.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE support, and a 6,000mAh battery that's good for up 17 hours of run time.

Like the Xperia M4 Aqua handset, Sony built its Xperia Z4 to be waterproof with IP65 (dust) and IP68 (water -- both splashes and submersion), the highest available in a tablet. The caveat is that all ports and covers must be firmly closed, and if they are, the tablet can withstand up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes.

For gamers, the Xperia Z4 Tablet boasts PS4 Remote Play, allowing you to connect the tablet to your PlayStation 4 via Wi-Fi and use the console's DualShock 4 wireless controller.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet will launch globally in June of this year. No word yet on price.
