RIM CEO Says Selling Off BlackBerry Hardware Production Is An Option

On many occasions Thorsten Heins, CEO of Research In Motion, has said he is willing to consider several different options for the company moving forward. It's no secret that RIM wants to license its upcoming BlackBerry 10 software. Another option Heins has considered is much bigger, and it involves selling off the production of BlackBerry hardware.

For now, Heins indicated the company's focus is on a successful launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform. The launch event is scheduled to take place next week. In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Heins said, "The main thing for now is to successfully introduce Blackberry 10. Then we’ll see."

During the interview, Heins explained RIM has taken time to build a platform that is future proof for the next decade. Heins intends for this platform to be used in smartphones, cars, and other areas. The OS can also be divided into two sections which can be encrypted differently to make a single handset work well for both personal and professional use.

Obviously, Heins and RIM have a lot of hope for the new platform. Will BlackBerry 10 represent a major comeback for RIM? The platform certainly has some attractive features, but it also has plenty of hurdles to overcome.
